I love her. She inspired Samus, but I had a problem with the movies because it seemed like she wasn't listened to or respected by her support cast.

And also there's always been the strong female character TM types, it's just that they usually fit one mold. They aren't allowed to really have emotions, show weaknesses, or just not be bad-Trash Panda! in hyper masculine ways. Let's be honest, there's a lot of different ways to be strong.

I think one of Wondy's biggest strengths is she's allowed to show compassion and love without it seeming like a weakness. And the lasso and bracers were never the punchy style that you see so much.
    • SouleBreaker
      SouleBreaker
And I also want to say that I'm not against the punchy style types, just that they are the only ones that usually dominate that perspective. There's room for all different types of strong women.

Soule: that was the point (re: Ripley). With the exception of Hicks no one really respected/supported her - and they all paid for it.

      Some gruesomely.

Sounds like, Soule, you are holding Aliens to an impossibly high standard.

It did a great job being a movie and it did just fine at showing that women can be the intelligent one on the crew who not only knows what's up, but can handle the situation all on her own.

Hard to be compassionate and loving in space when aliens are face hugging all the supporting cast. lol

I don't think Wonder Woman IS the first strong female lead. I guess it depends on what genre you're looking for... as far as strong female super heroes I think she would indeed be the first in a long line of heavily male dominated films.

I think society has just been positioned in a certain way to think this way about this movie. I haven't seen WW so I can't make a fair critique about it but I'm not understanding the framing of a lot of the reception it's getting.

Wonder woman as a character has always been strong and powerful. She's arguably one of the strongest females in the DC universe. Her isolated and battle oriented upbringing probably makes her a bit more stoic than your everyday modern woman so she can be a bit rugged but she's still the embodiment of femininity and female empowerment. Costume choices aside, she's always been a very progressive symbol for woman (especially in a time when woman weren't always viewed as equals).

I'm just not really understanding the hype around this film that's making it seem as if this is the very first time a woman has ever done anything worthwhile. It kind of feels like it discounts a lot of accomplishments that have set society up to receive this movie this way.

We as a society, have come a long way from damsel in distress, ingenue or romantic soundboard for the male lead to strong powerful woman who carry the films and stories, countless action genres centered on the femme fatale (to be fair sex appeal does play a part), and coming of age stories practically dedicated to young girls and their struggles.

Idk it just feels like people are trying a bit too hard to make wonder woman a symbol for something that she has always represented. Her conception and creation was ground breaking for it's time with it's strong feminist themes. However all this current commotion around the movie sort of comes off as a countermovement to the various political direction the country has taken (especially with regards to woman). It all just feels very disingenuous.

You can't make Wonder Woman something she's always been... she IS not the first. She WAS the first. I feel like there's a big difference in those statements and it changes the agenda quite a bit.

I'm not holding it to a strong standard. Holding Hollywood to a strong standard. Just saying that it's a type that's pretty frequent and there aren't exceptions overall. I love the movie. But it's a type of female character. I'm happy that there are different types starting to be portrayed.

This wasn't the first movie with a strong female lead, but it was one of the first with a different type.

Wondy isn't just the battle worn strong type. Her purpose was to show that compassion and love can go a long way too. Writers tend to concentrate only on the warrior side more recently. This movie flew in the face of that, and went back closer to how she was originally meant to be.
    • SouleBreaker
      SouleBreaker
And again want to stress, Aliens is a great movie. There is nothing invalid about Eleanor Ripley. Nothing.

Just happy for variety in storytelling and character types. It leads to more depth.

Not tearing down Aliens to prop up Wondy. Just adding that there are differences to the character that is rare.

      This is true.

      Scade
This is technically true, but also worth considering: it's been 14 years since Buffy went off the air, 16 since Xena, 26 years away from Sarah Connor, and 30 years from Ripley. For many women of this generation, Wonder Woman is their first strong female lead in a production of this kind.
    • Maggotbreath
      Maggotbreath
Scade - Ellen Paige in Hard Candy not good enough? /sarcasm (but still an awesome movie).

But you're also leaving out Underworld and Resident Evil. Now while both series have movies that are clear misses, they do the awesome female lead bad a$$ very well. Both are also pretty recent.

Not trying to detract from WW as I haven't seen it yet, but there's (in my male brain) still recent female arse kickers.

Are they as prevalent? Nope, not saying that. But I'm also getting pretty tired of the gravelly voiced white guy trope in movies and games.

Scade: that is just a false statement. Maggot pointed out a few but there are a crap ton since 2000 on especially. Just because it didn't have a WB or Marvel embroidered on it doesn't mean it didn't happen. Not to mention most female characters on television are the "strong/smart" while the males are the comic relief.

In my opinion any woman or man that needs a strong lead from movies, books or anyother form of entertainment to inspire them has larger issues.
    • Payneshu
      Payneshu
I agree Wot, but only with the first paragraph.

People need role models to help them be inspired. Many people can only perceive that which they can see for themselves. Having different kinds of positive depictions of people is the best way to inspire good behaviors in the populous. There is a reason why we see more social media posts of people "doing it wrong" since places like peopleofwalmart.com and reality TV became a thing.
    • wotrick
      wotrick
One could argue that looking to the realm of fantasy for a role model in itself is part of the problem. Its cool to look to an actor or an athlete and say, " damn that person is smooth and can handle a situation, I want to be able to be that smooth." But to need a fictional character to admire is odd to me. I wanted to be like my dad, he busted his Trash Panda! and provided a life for his family, that something to aspire to.

I get I have a different view point as a fictional piece of art/work has never moved, taught nor left me pondering.

If we're talking about "badass" female characters within the superhero/action genre that attained the same level of cultural recognition other than the four I mentioned, I can't think of many. Janeway, I guess? 16 years ago. Uma Thurman in Kill Bill? 14 years ago. (Even so, we mainly know her as "The Bride.")

That's not to say there aren't a "crap ton" of strong female characters out there, but they've been minor by comparison. Everyone I knew growing up could recognize Ripley/Xena/Buffy (Sarah Connor probably got overshadowed by Arnie), even if it wasn't their thing. They were woven into a broader cultural fabric. Whether you treat them as role models or not, they were at least a common point of reference. "that chick from Underworld" doesn't carry the same weight.

@Keta - Newt is alive if you ignore anything after Aliens as a bad dream Ripley is having in hypersleep like I do lol....And actually anything before Alien because my god those prequels are dumpster fires, but maybe you appreciate them more. I can't stand them.

@Maggot - Alice and Selene (who was inspired by the Black Queen herself) are just mary sues though.

WW is NOT a mary sue.

      neither is Ripley.

The original was a lot of fun. Some of the best dungeon designs and boss fights I've ever seen. Looks like they didn't update too many graphics, but the story is absolutely phenomenal and the quests are truly unique and amazing.

  • I wish Gaz employees could be bothered to anything. Like, respond to simple questions, do the same thing twice in the same way, have any part of my experience be uniform. For instance, boosts, buffs, and how dashes work. I think the moment it all became too real is when a whisper of EXP buffs not on made me stop playing the game during presumably the best time of the year to play the game. I genuinely don't trust the staff to flip that switch correctly. I need that Jean! verified.
