Michael, please don't remove Non-Corporeal Beatdown from Kitty's kit. I like the power because of the animation and sound. What's the harm of keeping it in her kit? Psyche Drain was going to be removed from Emma's kit but you opted to keep it because the community and fans liked the power. So why can't Kitty fans get the same treatment? If anything, please replace Non-Corporeal Beatdown with Martial Arts Combo.
Look at Non-Corporeal's tooltip on Live without its associated talent. It's nothing. It's just a blank power. Everything unique about it was an add-on that can go elsewhere and not keep a dead power in her tree that has no purpose other. The animation was an old 3-hit combo from ancient times that looked terrible and would need to be renovated (looks nothing like how she should fight). Animation aside, the other powers in the kit do everything NCB did in the exact same manner it did.
1. Drain Psyche was removed without a purpose like NCB case. It was forgot to be included.
2. Hurlwind argument is on point, but I wish it wasnt. Sigh.
3. @MichaelMayhem I don't see a lot of difference between three punches and 2 punches 2 kicks, to be honest. Even like this, I prefer NCB over Martial Arts too. In the end of the day, you're the dev and you call the shots, but know that the community is not happy with this decision. We can't find a middle ground or even a better solution to make NCB better?
Yes, I'm aware of that but the community and I still prefer NCB over Martial Arts Combo. The animation, even though is an ''old 3-hit combo'' looks better than Martial Arts. The sound effect is better too.
You could easily keep NCB and Martial Arts Combo (even labeling them both basics such as is the case with Colossus). Add another affix to NCB so that it does something you think makes it unique from Martial Arts Combo (like 1% damage bonus per 1% attack speed or something).
The talent that maps Martial Arts Combo into Disciplined Strike would remain. So you'd still have the option to use both if you so wish. NCB could've even been considered her non lockheed single target attack while Martial Arts Combo was her Lockheed single target/resource return power.
You could've even kept NCB and used the Sword Wielder talent to map Martial Arts Combo into Katana Slash, NCB into Discipline Strike, and Quicksand into Shadowcat's Pirouette.
However you won't do any of this because your team is moving in a direction of one single target spender/basic per hero especially if that hero has a unique resource (which Kitty now does).
You've removed what you deem to be unnecessary clutter to her kit in the form of multiple powers that do essentially the same thing with different animations (over here, NCB) and removed the unique mechanics of her sword powers (bleed) and offered two of her katana powers as talents for visual flavor while completely getting rid of her katana basic.
All of this was done to fit her katana and phasing powers neatly into one common tree with a consistent design purpose. In the process you've homogenized the character and removed many of the customization features that made kitty so unique upon her release.
I thought bleeding for sword powers was a thematic mechanic that made her katana powers stand out from her phasing powers. I don't really mind that the + damage to damage over time enemies was removed but I find it ironic considering that Invisible Woman players have been begging for her unnecessary vulnerability applicators to other powers to be removed (pretty much the same thing that was done to Kitty's sword powers).
On top of that you've completely contradicted yourself by removing not one but multiple powers from Kitty's kit because they were seen as mechanically redundant and visually inferior when in the past you've said "we can't just remove a power if someone doesn't like it because there are people who use it".
So yes, you are correct there are multiple powers that people use and people don't like the power being taken away especially if it was something they enjoyed using exactly as it was (for whatever reason).
It's also preferable to keep the many varied powers that perhaps do the same thing even if that's not a design philosophy you adhere to anymore. Kitty feels like a shell of the character she once was.
I liked NCB for the functionality, but I sympathize with those who will miss an animation they really enjoyed...like Psi-Knife.
I dont really understand why these different animations can't be made into cosmetic options. Like, NCB and Martial Arts Combo can both exist with identical dps in the same spot in the skill tree via spec toggle or some other system.
Heck, you could probably even monetize alternate skill visuals as toggled flourishes! I think the main point is just that players tend to dislike removal of existing aesthetics
I understand MM's point from a design perspective. Powers have to justify their existence in some way beyond aesthetics (but see Cyke's Magneto call-in talent?). There's also the issue of skill clutter and pointless bloat that is confusing to new and returning players. Everything he's said about this change makes perfect sense.
And yet, we like customization and hero fantasy, and removing visuals detracts from that. It seems like a small thing with NCB, but it's a bigger issue that has come up again and again with things like Psi-Crush, Psi-Knife, dome/barrier powers, summon skins, particle colors, GR's ult visual, Sparklebot, etc.
To their credit, MM and the team have been really good about finding ways to add/return these things where they have a gameplay purpose. NCB doesn't really serve a gameplay purpose, but some players like it. I would like to see some discussion of how we can keep those cosmetic options without infringing on the design space.
