Happy Hump Day! Today I'm working on getting final check ins done before we lock the open beta patch. Things are coming together! I'm also spending time on event planning for the rest of 2017 and early 2018 for both PC and console and checking in on PC 4th anniversary stuff! The pet is coming a long quite nicely, I think you'll be happy with the choice. First playtest of the Danger Room scenario happened monday and VFX is working on the new Team-up! Lots of progress across the board!

    Hey, I read one of your posts about looking at making "Hero Variants" like Odinsson and you gave the example of a Hulkbuster Iron Man as his own hero....that's awesome I know his HB is light on Skins but an "Enhanced Hulkbuster War-Machine" Costume would make me spend all my G's instantly! Thanks for the great work!

  • Today's Topic: Tact!

    Had an interaction yesterday with someone who visited my stream and started saying things like "x item is crap". While, I am 100% behind players having their own opinions of items and things we build, comments like this make me, and other developers bristle.

    Telling someone that their work is crap is a really good way to disincline them from wanting to listen to your feedback. Blame it on whatever you may want, but coming to someone in an overly aggressive tone like that will never ever give you any influence. If your goal is to help effect change, remember that positive interaction is always better than negative interaction.

    Tact is an important thing to have in our culture today, as the internet has made it possible to not have any and not have to deal with repercussions. Remember, what you type is just words on a page, but those words are read by human beings with feelings.

I'm just used to the hate that has been recently going around, I've actually been getting some for supporting you guys (with BUE not heroes! ~SpiderWoman~) but just brush it off.       Formatting does seem to work on leader board posts these days. I know emotions get high and people get frustrated with certain items (heroes or content in general) that are under performing and sometimes that turns into harsh feedback instead of leveled feedback, but this a good reminder for the ones who don't seem to get it. Sorry you had to deal with such rudeness when you're trying to do something fun and helpful with the community. Sorry I missed the stream this weekend too.

      Yeah, there's nothing wrong with being diplomatic when giving feedback. Never understood the "I'll be hostile to get attention" point of view.... since it rarely gets you the attention you want when you use it.

      I think the problem is a lot of times, the 'hot' issues with tons of replies/feedback do get change. And for those topics, there will always be rude comments amongst the feedback. So while the changes might be mainly due to the feedback that is critical but constructive, players that provided the negative ones will say 'see, if we didn't rage about it, Gaz wouldn't have changed it'. So they can justify their next rant because they feel their previous rant was the only reason things got changed

      @neverfate - Nothing has changed in terms of design goals with omega items since we posted the blog in terms of affix design. We have, thought, decided not to use unique names/art for them and keep them using the same item names and art as you see from white> cosmic.

      @lordmilutin - Yes! Console version does exactly this. If it is successful, we will consider bringing it to the PC version, but would require massive changes to how content unlocks on PC.

      @wotrick - We had a meeting where we discussed ideas for new playables. Our Creative Director wanted us to think of stuff outside the box, throw ideas at the wall that were crazy and different. That got thrown up there and the more we all talked about what we could do with it, the more excited we all got. We've wanted to do "Hero Variants" for a while, most notably things like Hulkbuster Iron Man, where the hero has a powerset that is so different from the current playable version that it makes sense to start from scratch and make a new one. This is our first attempt with it and hope to learn a lot from the experience.

      @rasetsu - Hard to answer this. The new affixes/item progression/etc has been designed from the ground up as a brand new system for players starting from scratch. It wasn't designed to take in to account 4 years of existing game data or conversion. If we decide to move this stuff over to PC, that HUGE question will need to be answered. How to we bring what we feel is a far superior item progression to PC without wrecking all the work players have already done. Additionally, moving JUST itemization over isn't really possible, since all of our systems are very intertwined and connected.

      @tzeentch - Here's one we came up with many months ago in an early draft: When your health drops below 20%, spend all of your remaining Debris to do a metric Trash Panda! ton of damage (45s Cooldown)

      These are still all in the paper design stage, not final nor have been playtested for feel.

      @rasetsu - I won't speak for @orren, but like i said earlier, not much has changed in our design goals since the dev blog was written.

  • Today's Topic: What is Content?

    Last week, @zwolfiez said the following:

    You and I seem to have different opinions of the term "content." When you hear new content, you are expecting a permanent area you can go to. To me, anything that goes into the game is content. This includes costumes, fortune cards, events, updates (like the animation cancel update we did on all 60+ heroes).

    This caused some understandable concern. But, from a designer point of view, he is correct.

    "Content" refers to anything new we put in game. It is commonly used to mean PLAYABLE content. When it comes to playable content, we have released a decent amount over the course of the last year. Civil War, Ultron and Super Skrull Terminals, Danger Room Tournaments, Dark Dimension event, etc. These are shorter content pieces with less replayability. I think you'll see in the roadmap today, bigger pieces of playable content are on their way...

      Replayabilty is one of the biggest issues here. Honestly, I'm all for more Danger Rooms mechanics and tilesets, bosses and affixes, because I think DR is what offers the most fun gameplay in this game. It's similar to maps in PoE and Greater rifts in D3 and I have a lot of fun on these kind of modes. Which is why it was kind of sad that it seemed like you guys abandone that mode, because for a lot of us veterans (I only talk for the ones I know) CDR is where we can get competitive while having fun at the same time. I really miss the tournaments and working on improving my gear so I could get higher in the list.

      It would be also nice, as I said in one of my post, that you guys worked on something like providing us a better UI (so tracking buffs and debuffs wasn't a chore) and a better combat. Right now, with Patrols being pretty much the main zones for playability and the way VFX works in this game, it becomes stale after a while not being able to watch where's your character of dying because Ultron's signature or Jubilee's fireworks blocked you from being aware of Bullseye's telegraphs.

      Anyways, I hope it only gets better for the future.

      @wizzer Sorry you feel the need to leave. We like Spider-Woman and want to make her playable, just cannot, in good faith commit to a time right now.

      @RDroid agree with all points, and all of these things will be brought up soon.

      The biggest piece of the roadmap I think should be focused on is that we are making achievable commitments to you guys. We hate the history of broken promises, so we did A LOT of capacity planning to see what we think we can accomplish, and put that list together.

      @infinitygirl Since we would need UI work to update the PC to use the costume closet, and we dont have UI time this year for it, I would venture a guess to say that it will stay around longer than originally anticipated.

      @Qthulhu - Understandable, and we know that they don't appeal to some players. They do, however, sell very well and are an important part of our revenue generation as a company. I would say that gambling is an apt analogy, but there are plenty of products in other marketplaces that function like our fortune cards do. We are very careful about what we put in our Fortune Cards and mystery boxes. For more than a year, we've made sure that team-ups we put in FC's or MB's are variants only. More of a thing for collectors to chase.

      I cannot in good conscience call ground flourish's content when you flat out can't even see them combat because of the ground Aoe and powers spam everywhere. Yet this seems have become the preferred filler items for Supply Boxes, and now Fortune cards. As a niche visual, there's what seems to be an inordinate amount of development time dedicated to these things. I really would like to see alot less of flourishes getting pushed TBH, especially once your roster has a flourish apiece, they're kinda junky.

      @jamesbarnes I would caution against assuming anything regarding video game development. Flourishes are fairly quick to make, and dont require the same amount of production pipeline that others things do.

      Giving players more options for customizable visuals is an important thing for us, and flourishes play a very big part in that. While I understand that you may not like them, there are many that do. We focus on things for the entire playerbase, and those that have a pretty good ROI, like flourishes, are no brainers.

      What about increasing the representativeness of some teams? Inhumans only have Black Bolt - Medusa and Crystal are begging to be playable. The Guardians of the Galaxy need more members as well. But I'm also pretty shaken by not seeing Spiderwoman this year... However I understand the reasons to make Thor playable...

      Again, I'm also very aware that many of you may not think that X thing isn't "content". That's fair. However, when it comes to how we refer to things, which is the point of my post here, those things do fall under that category.

      @cavalcanti - While this is something we consider, it isn't the main reason we pick heroes to make. We look for characters in the Marvel universe that we feel we can portray with fun and interesting gameplay. Some things, such as popularity, tie ins with different marvel events(MCU/Comics) or player requests play a piece, but only a piece.

      The example I always give is that we get an incredible amount of requests for Jessica Jones to be playable. While she is a great character with fantastic stories, her powers aren't that interesting or different from other heroes we've done. Being an interesting character doesn't always translate to being a fun hero to play in a video game.

      @Asros I'm all for the additions of customizable visuals, but everyone would get alot for mileage out of them if there was just less general visual spam obscuring even just seeing them. The new VUs and models are great, but as a consumer I'm hesitant to to make visual purchases now because once you step inside Midtown or really any other zone, you can hardly see the cool new costume you bought, or the new Fortune card flourish you gambled on, under the visual barrage of everything. Like they literally look the best in the sandbox of the Training Room, not when I'm actually doing anything like fighting.

      Sprays in Overwatch are quite fun because you can combine them in funny ways. But in MH they last so little time and usually are so basic that they don't lead to those little moments.

      Ultron is fun to do but it is the same every time. Like x-def or danger room gives you variety from moment to moment. I always wished there had been a harder mode for them. And really harder modes all around for stuff besides story. Really I only log on these days to play in Danger Room or Raids.

      Obviously you're showing off stuff for PS4 (which is new) but it would also be nice to get a comparison between each version from a devs point of view. Idk maybe weighing the pros and cons of each platform is probably something you guys don't want to highlight but it doesn't take long to pick up on.

      I think it would be interesting to see what your perspective is of the PC experience both as a player and developer after working on the PS4.

      Swapping Judgement and Hellfire seems a strange move for GR players. Granted, it's only level 2, but this may lead to GR players having started with all chains abilities thinking that's the only way to go based on VERY first impressions. Ideally, you need inferno, a chains ability and hellfire at level 1 to express the differences in play. It MAY not be a huge deal, just working on VERY first impressions from someone brand new to the game interested in GR.

      Also, could you ping Vanilla or whoever for color formatting? Light blue on white is really straining on the eyes to read.

      That's really all the feedback I can give without actually playing the beta.

    hi Asros - I really like that you will be posting more regularly. I hope you will consider starting a Design (or whatever) thread like Dink's Art thread on the regular forums vs. your wall. the main reason is that it will be more visible to forum-goers. 1) your posts will show up in the Dev Tracker and 2) people would be able to subscribe to such a thread; they can't subscribe to your wall.

  • So, in an effort to increase communication lines with players, I think I'm going to try to post daily updates here, or at least several times a week, on things that I work on or other designers are working on (that are approved). Don't expect any huge reveals or announcements, we save those for official posts, press, social media, etc. But i figured even just giving a glimpse of what goes on might help out a bit.

    This week I've been splitting my time between console polish and PC 4th anniversary planning. I'm the "feature owner" for the 4th anniversary, so I'm responsible for getting all pieces of the event moving through various pipelines and past the finish line. New pet, new team-up, new playable content and other goodies coming.

    Console wise, I'm focusing on crafting polish and bugfixing. Playtest playtest playtest!

      Yeah, we're trying something new with feature owners. Someone in design is the main contact point for a certain feature and is responsible for getting it complete and out the door. I get to be the guinea pig, haha.

      I'm still a designer, I just make sure all the different disciplines are working together and getting where they need to in order to launch the feature on time. So far it is going pretty well!

    Today, I battle my nemesis, the great Icon Monster. I hope I will emerge victorious, I have faith!

    Also, doing more crafting polish(If those in the PS4 beta haven't checked it out, you should!). I'm also going to put up a crafting info/feedback thread in the MHO forums later today. There is a series of tutorial missions coming soon that should help introduce players to the system. I have some ideas on how to improve them, but feedback is always welcome.

    I showed off the new GotG vol 2 stuff yesterday. Still trying to iron out what the "event" specifics will be. The build is locked, so it would have to be things that can be livetuned. Will probably run cosmic chaos, since its cosmic related. Any thoughts?

      I still have a character I need to finish cosmicing (I know I'm slacking!) but there are probably some people who have cosmic burn out with all the great xp/cosmic events we've been getting.

      Idk which events can be livetuned but cosmic chaos does make the most sense for that event imo. I've been doing a lot of prestiging so anything that offers cube shards is a plus in my book.

      The crafting overhaul in MHO is really nicely done. I'm hoping the vender/crafter progression is something that can be easily brought over to MH PC. I know that the improvement alone in how crafters are leveled is a huge qol. I'm sure a lot of new players would appreciate that especially with the removal of unique to credit chest recipes. Also the idea of the progression system where you guys could theoretically add new levels to the crafter and add new recipes greatly improves the depth and lifespan of crafting in the game imo. Not to mention all the visual improvements for icons and visual flavor.

      The skrull's can work for that sort of. The skrull term could be a good place to hold one. Not sure what you would do for it. Perhaps see how fast you can clear the map or something. Good place to farm ssb. Maybe a skrull survival tournament with Superskrull in Danger Room like what was done with Cable (still one of the best tournaments imo). Would be a good challenge with his summons and what not but probably take a lot of time to implement.

      Yeah, iconic seems to be some sort of code word for praiseworthy and doubles as a form of shunning.

      I'm not sure why Icons should be such a big whoop in-game, but then again, I'm not a programmer. I have noticed over the years that icons never seemed to be a focus of designs. More like a "we better put something there." I thought reused icons was a function of limited bandwidth and to be fair, you can't "play icons" so it has never really bothered me!
