New Player Guide: What the Tutorial does not tell you

New to the game? There are a few basics the tutorial does not tell you about!

1. Fast travel

* Up in the right hand corner is a small symbol. It allows you to "Bodyslide". Like the town portal in Diablo, it teleports you to the nearest hub so you can sell off or stash your loot. Clicking on it again takes you back to the exact point where you left. Works in instances too!

* In a group? Want to catch up? Click on a player icon to bring up a small menu, and choose "Teleport"! If you are defeated in a boss fight, this can be used to get back in the fight quickly. Just release and port back in! Note: ...but not in not if it looks like the boss is likely to go down soon. You will only get credit if you are in the same room when this happens.

* There is an extra area in Chapter one, accessible from the Teleport device in the Hubs. It has training dummies for checking out damage.

2. Gear

* Press "ALT" while hovering over a piece of gear to see min and max rolls!

* "Special Item Find" will increase your chances of getting drops of stuff from the store, like Eternity Splinters, costumes and retcons. Many players considers this to be the most important stat in the game. Anything with a pink text is affected by SiF.

* "Rarity" will get you better chances of regular gear drops, like purples or cosmics.

* The "interesting" stats, like "get extra crit when you dodge", extra skills or similar abilities comes from medals and artifacts. You will start getting artifacts at around level 10-12, when you reach Madripoor. "Cosmic" and "Unique" rarity gear can also have extra abilities. If you play at "Heroic" or "Super Heroic" levels, you will receive better versions of the story mode awarded artifacts. Note that these count as different artifacts, allowing you two of the same at once!

* Donate everything you do not need to the crafter. This will be Pym in the Avengers Tower. This will, among many other important things, give you the chance to add stats to your costume and craft new costumes. After you are done with the crafter, move on to the enchanter. (Some prefer doing it the other way around.) You can safely skip the other two vendors.

* Get a pet! After both the crafter and enchanter are upgraded to 20, start on Cybernetics. Under "Options -> Gameplay" you can set at which rarity your pet will auto-vacum loot. You can also press "J" or donate directly from your inventory. If you don't like the bonus, reset it at the crafter.

* Some loot has a special audio signal when it drops. Eternity Splinters are a ringing tone. Most of the "don't miss"-stuff has a pointer to it if you move off-screen. Anything with a "beam" from the sky is generally worth picking up at all times.

* Slotted relics can be stacked! Up to 1000, but you can't remove them once you have added them, without Unbinding, which is expensive.

3. Get a unique look

There are two ways to stand out from the crowds (a bit).

* New costumes. Buy in the store or get them as drops. The rarest costumes are called "chase costumes" and they can be bought once a month (or so) from the store. Just wait if you can't see them at the moment. You can also craft random costumes, if you have a lvl 20 crafter and 3 old costumes to spend. (Hint: Prestiging gives a free costume!)

* Add a visual artifact to your costume. Some artifacts have a visual effect. By equipping them or using crafting to add them to a costume you can alter your look a bit. If you see see some Heroes that seem larger than normal, this comes from such an artifact.

4. Alts

* You will get 400 splinters when you log in on day 2. If you do not have a must have hero, spend it on a random hero box or two. At 175 splinters it's the best value. You risk getting a duplicate, but when you only have one hero the risk is minimal, and you have a chance of getting a 600 splinter hero. There is no connection between cost and how good a hero is. Some of the best heroes are 200 splinters.

* You can play all starting heroes to level 10. If you buy random boxes with your 400 splinters, don't choose which one to get for free until after you have opened the boxes! This way your first box will have a zero chance of being a duplicate.

* Eternity Splinters are used to buy new Heroes. Splinters have a (low) chance of a double or a 10 pack drop. You can also buy heroes directly from the MH homepage or with G's from the in game store. You can also use them for Team-ups, a kind of summon. Every Team-up is shared among all your heroes so you only need one. (More can be fun, though.) Groot is 200 splinters and very good.

* There are a few quests which gives a special reward the first time a Hero completes them, like a free Retcon or a bonus skill point. When you have run through the campaign, you can start over in "Heroic" (and later "Super Heroic") mode, and get all the rewards, including extra skill points, again. You switch mode from the hero rooster, at the bottom of the panel.

* Prestigeing means starting over from lvl 1 when you have reached lvl 60. It gives you a new standard costume, a new color for your name in chat and the possibility to buy a pet for 1 million credits. The last comes in handy for Cybernetics.

5. Leftover Hints

* You can get free pets (for Cybernetics) and free Team-ups! One free Team-up comes from collecting "files" during Omega week, which comes around every month. There is also a login reward at day 200. Pets can come from login awards (day 100), Fortune cards Mk1 (pay with shards at the vendor behind and above the crafter in Avengers Tower), very rare drops, Cosmic week (also once a month) or you can buy one with credits after you Prestige.

* If you don't want to auto group in instances, you can turn it off in options.

* High level crafting mats drop like candy later on. Don't bother upgrading them unless you need something right away.

* If there is a patch that changes any Hero in any significant way, you will get a free retcon.

* Don't want to do the story over again? There are two Patrol Modes where leveling is very fast. Terminals, from level 20, are also a good alternative. Consider following the Legendary quests, XP is decent and you will get Odin Marks which you will spend on Legendaries and Blessings later on.

* If you want to buy a Hero, check out the MH homepage as well, you can buy packs with extras that can turn out to be good value. There are also occasional sales, both in the in-game store and on Steam.

*If you buy G's, consider using them for more S.T.A.S.H. as this cannot be obtained any other way. You can get heroes, costumes and fortune cards by playing the game.

* Note that some heroes are stronger than others. If you have trouble, you might have an easier time with another hero.

* In time, you will get a lot of Uniques. Duplicates can be traded for stacks of relics or credit chests at the crafter.

Any additions or corrections welcome!

Other things not told in the tutorial are
The alt button shows dropped items

You can access the gear of any hero without swapping by opening the roster area clicking the character to edit once and then opening the character window.

I'm sure other folks have picked up some more tricks too :) good helpful starter guide.

Hey Hassan -

Great guide! Really insightful! But I had a question about this tip:
5. Leftover Hints

You can quick slot more powers! Right click on the powers for the left and right mouse buttons to bring up a menu. Hover over the power you want and press an F key. Note that some powers cancel when you switch them out.

I tried right clicking on the power for the menu u spoke of but nothing happened. What am I missing?

@Zyrik Assuming you are at least lvl 3 or so, so there are extra powers here.

This only works for the powers assigned to the mouse buttons. The left and rightmost on your power bar. Single right click on any of these two slots, and you should get a pop up, right over the hotbar slot. This has all powers you can assign to a hotkey on it. Mouse over any icon and press an F key.

It's not the "big" power window, where you assign skill points, but in the actual hotkey bar.

Good info for new players.

With a bit of luck, his life was ruined forever. Always thinking that just behind some narrow door in all of his favorite bars, men in red woolen shirts are getting incredible kicks from things he’ll never know.
